Dear all,

Ok so the digital age is catching me up. Although my beloved T-90 is still used and will be working hard this weekend, it seems almost inevitable that a new EOS D-SLR will replace it. Th only question I need to get a definive answer for is which one to go for given my photographic subjects.

1) Sports Horses - show jumping, 3-day evening & racing
2) Wildlife - with long lenses
3) Birds - with long lenses.

I was going to go for the 300D or secondhand 10D until that 'nice' person at Canon at a trade show let me play with them (and also an unbadged 20D). I personally found the 300d to feel too plasticy and the 10D about right - compared with what I was used to in terms of weight. I found that the apparent shutter release delay and slow fps rate fire would probably leave me wanting more especially when wanting to blitz a few images off of eg a horse jumping -> landing. I found the 20D to be really what I was used to in terms of fps and speed of response. The T90 has a 4.5fps rate so it seems illogical to downgrade just to go digital.

Should I save for the 20D for a bit longer or go with what is currently in my price-range? I think I know what to do but would just appreciate some advice from those more in the know than I am!

PS Any offers on a T90, 3 lenses, 2 converters and flash??!!!

ATB,

Dave.

Well Dave, what can I say, you have entered the winter contest, maybe you will be the lucky winner!! of a nice Canon d20

The thing is...Dave has been entered into the contest just by posting...

If you do win, welll this is a question that will not have to be answered but...

I would save up for the 20D personally. While the 10D was fine, the 20D is improved and for what you want (speed), you will notice the difference.

I agree with Kevin. I have the 10D and it is a great DSLR but I am saving for the 20D.

Save up for the 20D. You will not be disapointed. ;)

Hopefully sometime this Spring. Maybe when I get my income tax refund back. (If I can convince my wife.)

Dave

If you haven't already made up your mind or actually bought something, I'd really try to stretch to buy the 20D.

They are now generally available here in the UK, and prices have dropped a bit - if you shop around. I'm hoping to pick up a 20D this afternoon and Jessops have agreed to price match an online retailer who is offering the body only at £984.

If you are prepared to buy from Europe or somewhere like 7dayshop, you can get them slightly cheaper still, but there are obviously potential disadvantages if it goes wrong, turns up broken etc. You'd also have to buy UK manuals (I think these can be obtained for abot £13-15. 7day and some others also sell Us grey imports. Nothing wrong with the cameras, just no UK/Europe warranty.

Thanks Adam,

I'm pretty much stuck on a 20D and just need to save the extra money now.

I'm also determined to steer clear of buying a cheaper one from the european importers (7dayshop and various UK sellers on Ebay included) as I really do not want to get the camera at a bargain price and then get stung for the import tax on the full UK RRP from something that gets sent from overseas. Although saying that if anyone I know does go to the States they can get one for me while they are over there!!

;)

Buying from 7dayshop or anywhere in Europe shouldn't cause VAT or import problems. 7day were selling without VAT, but now include it in all their prices for the UK, but they are still grey imports and customer service is questionable!

Buying from outside the UK/Europe could easily lead to VAT & import duty problems!
