View Full Version : Is it true?
That Tamron and Tokina lenses are second rate?
I cant see why they should be. Is this a snobbery issue??

I've never used either, back in my old SLR days I used the original FD Canon lenses, now that I'm looking at moving to a 10D I've been reading loads of reviews and I'd be more than happy to have a Tamron or a Sigma until I'm rich enough to afford Canon glass *drools*

I like Sigma glass...it is nice...I have a 50-500 and a 20-35...both take excellent pictures.
I have not really tried any Tamoron lenses, although I think I had one when I owned my Pentax SLR back in the late 80's early 90's...seemed ok to me, although I could not comment now.
Now Canon glass is the way to go...if you can afford it. I have 2 Canon lenses, the most expensive one cost me around $600, but that is just your normal price for a normal USM lense.
The Sigma 50-500 set me back $1100 when I bought two years ago, but that was for my honeymoon to Kuai, so I had to spend some bucks. That is the most I ever spent on a lense. I really could not get away with spending much more...Wife would not approve.

Thankfully I don't have anyone to justify to but myself but seeing how the camera and two lenses plus a 2x extender is going to cost me 1/3 the price of a nice new car I have to be sensible.
I decided on the following but if I can do better with Sigma or Tamron lenses I will do that when the time comes;
Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF Extender 2X II
I'm hoping that may cover most of what I want to do, given the 1.6x magnification of the 10D it works out to nearly 1000mm so I thought the IS might be handy and I can't imagine shooting too much at that length for long periods of time anyway.
I am curious though as to how it will handle wider angle lenses with that multiplication factor, how does your 20mm look on the D30? Any good example shots in your gallery?

Did not have time to find a good one, but this gives you an idea of the 20MM with the D30...

This was taken a few years ago, and I need to reprocess the image.

I dont mind 3rd party lenses, they get the job done. now, with that being said not all lenses are the same. I only stick to Tokina, and Sigma. Tammron i just have not gotten, but would be the only other 3rd party maker I'd consider.
Im a pentax user, and of course would love to have all pentax glass, its a little better, and build quality is usualy a little better than the others. This is the case for all the "big 4" makers Cannon, Nikon, Pentax, Menolta.
But brand name glass does cost. If you need the glass, get the 3rd party, untill you can aford the brand-name. My opinions. But in one case, I will keep a lens... my Tokina 28-80 f2.8 ATX Pro, pentax's is only 28-70, I like the lil extra 10mm.
Well have fun, hope I helped
