I am looking for a good long range lenses for my cannon 30d. Any recommendations. I like to capture wildlife, landscapes, and my kids sports.

Welcome, Matt! How do you like your 30D? There's lots of great lenses available for the Canon, what kind of budget did you have in mind? When you say "long range" do you mean a long telephoto lens, or a lens with a wide zoom range?

I am looking for a long telephoto lens. I would like to stay around $500.

You might like to look at the 70-300 IS USM (ie not the DO version).

This lens is reasonably priced, has a good range (112-480 : 35mm equiv), is not too big or heavy AND the real killer is that it has great IS (image stabilisation).

I bought this lens a few months ago and have been really pleased with it. Focusing may not be quite as fast as some, but it is still quite quick, especially if it is already at vaguely the right distance. I haven't really had any issues with that.

The image quality seems very good and those that know more about these things than I do, say it is close to L quality.

The other lens I would expect people to mention is the 70-210 f4. This is another great lens, but has 50% less reach and no IS. The build quality is better, but the build of the 70-300 is still good enough for most, provided you don't intend to chuck it about too much or use it in pouring rain! The 70-210 is slightly faster wide open than the 70-300, but for me, the IS more than compensates for this (and yes I know that IS can't stop a moving object!).

Hope this helps.
