Canon To Make More CMOS Sensors For Digital SLRs

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Canon Inc. (7751) is taking steps to increase its production of CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors for digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras.

The company will invest about 6 billion yen to install a new line that can process 8-inch wafers at its Ayase facility in Kanagawa Prefecture. Canon did not reveal the scale of its CMOS production, but said the new line would double the firm's production capacity when it begins operating early next year.

Demand for digital SLR cameras is exploding, and a tight supply situation could develop for CMOS sensors, which serve as electronic eyes.

Canon's line of digital SLR cameras includes the high-end EOS-1Ds and the relatively inexpensive EOS-10D.
