I'd love one, thank you :)
Considering the price point that its aimed at I think I have found my first Digital SLR. The 1.7 lens multiplier bugs me a bit but thankfully I don't do much macro work. Certainly beats paying 4-5 times as much for the 1Ds

Bringing this thread up to date a little.....
I bought one at the end of May. No focus problem noticed. No complaints at all!

Darn! Looks like my plans have been a little set back, due to a slowdown at work I'm not on as much overtime which although its great to be catching up on my workload I was loving the money and looking forward to getting my camera at the end of the month. Oh well, I'll get there.
Glad to see yours is working wel Rufus!
Now hurry up and get yours Kevin :)

Still no problems.
Updated firmware to 1.1, did wedding shoot, plus 3000 casual pictures....
So, who else here has one??

Rufus asked who else had one. I do, currently with the 24-70mm (38-112) 2.4L USM. I hybridize daylilies, and use it mostly for full faced flower photos.
Have enjoyed other shots with it as well. Here is one of the east sky after sunset (yes, I said "east")
What is a recommendation for my "next" lense?
What about a tripod? Am looking at the SLIK SPRINT PRO, and wonder if the 4.5 lb capacity will be enough.

Good to meet you.
Hybridise daylillies???
I am a rice pudding maker!
It's intersting that you comment upon that sky being EAST. I noticed myself, a few days ago, how fiery the eastern sky was, whilst the actual sunset was a bit weak. Odd. What's going on there?
Your next lens? Blimey, I'm not the dog to ask! I only have a 28-90 and a 1.8 50mm, a total of £200 worth!!!
As far as tripes go, I fancy a Benbo contortionist type one.
If I can set it up right, it'll scare the neighbours away!
So Paul, how is your 10D behaving? Do you use a 550 flash? Raw? Jpg?
Any of these reported focus issues? I guess not, or you'd have said........
What was your previous camera, Paul?
Would you allow a dog to run riot with your camera?
Am I mad?
REGARDS,
Rufus (UK).

Hi
I got a 10D with grip and 24-70 f/2.8 L on Friday. Shot some product shots on Saturday and found it was not focussing properly with auto focus. Manual focus is fine but AF is out. I took it back to the dealer today (with a CD of sample images to illustrate the problem) and am waiting to see what happens next. I would prefer a new replacement, assuming Canon can guarantee that it will work in AF mode, but I may consider a repair, although I don't see why I should have to have a repair on something brand new and costing over £1,000.
I hope I can get a good one, it felt like a niec camera.
Glad you people seem to have good units though :-)

Hello there!
I'm sorry you are having problems. I must say that I consider myself fortunate to have had no such issues, (so far), and have found the 10D to be quite satisfactory.
It really isnt good enough, is it? These scattered problems are creating bad feeling, and are causing terrible trouble to the unfortunate few.
All I can say to you is that once working correctly, the 10D is an excellent tool.
Regards,
RUFUS.

Finally received my 10D this afternoon. Took it home and took a few test shots...This is actually the 11th image I took with the camera. I also took about 5 shots at the store to make sure I was not getting a dud.
I think I got a good one here. No image problems or focusing issues that I can see at all. This image was taken with a Canon 28mm-135mm f3.5 IS lense.

Please excuse my recent absence, but I've had real problems getting in. This time I have managed to log in at 05:45 UK, and everything seems to be OK.
Kevin, glad you finally got the 10D. It's a great camera. You know that we now expect a large quantity of great pictures dont you...
Yesterday, after much waiting, I aquired a 28-135 IS second hand from our local Jessops store. It was boxed and absolutely as new for £240. I suppose that's about $300 ish.
Can you imafgine my enthusiasm? I drove out, (taking the day off work), and took 100's of pictures, only to return home, download, and find that the lens was A LEMON!
I'll post some pics soon...........................
Rats!

Glad you got back in Rufus.
That is ashame about your lemon lense. I guess that type of stuff happens.
I have a assignment this weekend to take shots at our local AIDS Walk fundraiser. I will be using the 10D and my D30 for that. I will post when I get back. Until then, I will be taking some more test shots tomorrow with my different lenses.

Hello K.
Pics look good, but do you think maybe the colour is a bit oversaturated, just a tad?
kevinrstruck
22nd August 2003, 06:25
Hell yeah they are - I am actually testing some Photoshop actions and also testing some different monitors.
These last few have been Over- saturated on purpose. You would not believe the differences between different monitors. It is actually striking.

Heya Rufus,
Glad to see you made it back alive! That makes two lenses now that don't like you. Sure its not your camera? :P
Do they look ok when you take them through the viewfinder?

Hi J.
No, I believe that the camera is fine. When you look through the VF, the image looks ok, but it's impossible to be sure until you actually see the pic larger/printed.
I know what the REAL problem is..... My eye is bigger than my wallet!
(Not that I only have one eye you understand.............).
Yes, also, I bought a Manfrotto 55 tripe, with a 115 p/t head. Some dislike this head, but I think it's just fine. The Manf is dead cool, but heavy!
So. Back to you.
Over................................

Well, there's been a lot of talk that the 10D is discontinued. No doubt you've read about it on other forums.
It isnt true.
Go and check Rob Galbraith's and you'll see.

I finally had some time to head to the mountains here in Colorado and take some shots with my new 10D. I spent 2 days up there having some time with nature, relaxing, and shooting.
I did not have the best weather and missed a few shots due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I have a few I hope to share later this week after I process them.
I was at 8,000-12,500 feet all weekend, and did not really dress for the 25F-30F weather at higher elevations. This was just poor planning since I live here and know better. Since it was last minute and the temperture here in Denver has been in the 80s, I just was not thinking.
I will start posting soon.

Hi all,
I'm looking at getting myself a 10D, I currently have an old Nikon coolpix 700, which does still take some pretty good pictures, but it doesn't compare with my 35mm.
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with blow-ups and/or large format printers. I want to be able to make prints large enough to frame (and I'm not talking about 8x10)
I'm looking at getting a Epson Stylus 3000 or 4000 to go along with my new camera, but the math isn't working out to my satisfaction. 3088x2056 pixel resolution on the 10D compared to 2880 x 1440 dpi on the printer would make my print barely bigger than an inch
By using that math, even if I reduced the printer quality down to 600 dpi, and blew up my images in photoshop by 50% I'm still not getting a 17 inch print! And I'm not sure how well my image quality will turn out even at those ratios.
Is there something I don't know about modern digital imagery?
or am I just dreaming and need to wait for the next generation of technology to come around while I continue to play with my analog camera?
Thanks,
Troy

Hello Troy, it's good to "meet" you!
Now then, I think you are confusing Res and DPI: They are different things. I can assure you that at a print res of 250 dpi, (yes, 250), the prints will look just great.
Now I cant go into the ins and outs, because;
a: Its 06:00
b: I'm no mathematician
and
c: I'm lazy,
.....but I have read of many people printing 10D pics up to large poster size without problem. Naturally, you need an excellent low ISO, well focussed pic to start with, but that's stating the obvious.
I dont use a home printer anymore, but use a web-based company called Photobox. They are in the UK so no help to you, but here is a link which shows their res/quality requirements:
http://www.photobox.co.uk/quality.html
You'll see that they print 30x40 inch prints from 6mp digital images.
I've only so far tried 18x12, and they are first class, I assure you.
So, I hope this is useful to you, and I hope that we see much more of you in this forum, and on this site. We need people who ask good questions!!!
Regards to you,
RUFUS

G'day Troy,
Most people print their images between 200-300 DPI which gives you between an 8x10 to an 11x14 without having to really scale up your images. The biggest practical size most go for with the average image as Rufus has mentioned already is 12x18. I have seen 20x30 images and that is about the biggest I have seen that look great, beyond that the limitations begin to show.
But just like enlarging from film your digital image needs to be pretty good to begin with, the cleaner your original the more you can pull out of it. Sharper lenses and better sharpening techniques then come into play.
That is a story for another day though, the biggest decent prints I've seen from the 10D are 20x30. If you weren't using them to be viewed at close range I'm sure you can go bigger again.
Cheers,
Jamie

cool, thanks for the feedback guys.
I did a little research also, and it makes more sense to me now. 6.3 megapixel resolution looks like it is very comparable to 35mm.
You did raise some other questions though, but I'll save those for another thread :)
